Mowing is one of the most important lawn activities. We often forget, but mowing is unique to growing a lawn. There is no other plant that we consistently ‘prune’ every week for such a long period. It is also easy to forget that mowing consistently is more important than mowing at the right height.
Kentucky bluegrass lawns should be mowed at 2.5-3 inches. If you mow at the right height and at the right time, your grass clippings will never be more than about an inch long. Clippings this size will fall to the soil surface and decompose quickly without building a layer of thatch.
Recommended mowing heights:
Exposure Mow to: Mow when Grass is:
Sun 2.5 3.75
Shade 3 4.5
Once you have determined the correct mowing height for your type of fescue, mow consistently! If you mow at the right height and at the right time, your grass clippings will never be more than a couple of inches long. Clippings of this size will fall to the soil surface and decompose quickly without building a layer of thatch.
